De Potter'sDAVID De PotterJohannes Pootman was said to have possibly been related to the De Potter's of early New York. This doesn't seems likely although David De Potter was connected with the given name Victor. David de Potter was associated with the Gerrit Bicker who had a son name Victor. There was a David Davidse, possibly David de Potter, who appears at the baptism of David Bros at the New Amsterdam [New York] Dutch Reformed Church in 1639: David de Potter seems to have used the last name Jaspijn, perhaps meaning an occupational name. February 9, 1648 Pieter Cornelius Volckerszen [Viele]. Witnesses: Aert Willemszen, Goelman Henry, Sheriff of Flushing, and Evert Van Embden. Johannes Pootman's son Cornelius married a great grand daughter of Pieter Corneliuse Viele, Jacomyntje Viele. August 27, 1651 Judith Capt. Fyn. Witnesses: De Potter, Samuel Mojer, Judith Stuyvesants, and Lysbeth Mansvelt. August 22, 1652 Elisabeth Francois Fyn. Witnesses: David de Potter and Lady Genis. November 10, 1652 Lysabeth Marrite Jans. Witnesses: [In on echt overgewonnen.] Victoor Gerrit Bicker [and Aeltje Lubbertse not mentioned]. Witnesses: Francois Fyn and Helena Blommmaerts. Francois Fyn has David De Potter as a witness to his child's baptism. Above, we see here the appearance of the name Victor for the first time in the records of the church. Before 1700 in New York, only the Bicker family and Johannes Pootman's family used the name Victor. April 20, 1653 Sara Theunis Janzsen. Witnesses: David de Potter and his wife. Francois Fyn, du Fenne and the PotmansLet’s jump ahead to two records of the New York Church that involved the children of Johannes Pootman. The first record records the birth of Johannes and Cornelia Pootman’s first grandchild with Francois de Fenne as a sponsor: April 10, 1700 Niclaus Steven Bedent and Maria Potman. Witnesses: Francois de Femme and Maria Brouwer the wife of Barent Van Tilburg. Francois Femme was also known as de Fenne. Francois de Fenne married Anna Margaret Blank who was probably the sister-in-law of Victor Bicker. Francois de Fenne may have been a son or nephew of Francois Fyn an associate of David de Potter in baptismal records. David de Potter and Lady Genis were sponsors for a son of Francois Fijn. Lady Genis is by my guess David's mother. Francois Fijn in turn was a sponsor at the baptism of Victor Bicker the son of Gerrit Bicker. The name Victor is only seen in the Bicker and the Putman family in New York records before 1700 in New York, which may or may not indicated a link between the two families. In baptismal records of the New York City Dutch Reformed church the children of Cornalius de Potter were associated with the Laval family including Francois Laval.
