David Putman was born reportedly in New York about 1783. He had a son named Francis, which is not a very common name, and there was a Loyalsit Francis Putman who removed to Ontario, Canada, during the time of the American Revolutionary War and had property in Osnabrook, Ontario. It is my guess that David is a son of Francis Putman's assumed brother Adam Putman. David named his first son Adam, so my best guess is that David's father was Adam Putman of the Mohawk Valley, New York.
David was a ship's captain who sailed the lower Great Lakes. It is widely reported that David and his crew encountered a storm on Lake Erie and were ship wrecked near today's Welland County, Ontario. I was here after being marooned that David met and married Dorothy Hainer. The story seems to imply that David was not at first an resident of the area before this ship wreck.
David Putman married Dorothy Hainer
about 1806. In 1811 they had a son named Albert Putman. Dorothy Hainer's
parents have been variously have been reported as Derrick, or Richard, Hainer
and also Albert Hainer. Because Dorothy and David Putman did not have a
son named Richard or Derrick, but they did have a son named Albert. Albert
Hainer who was also the son of Henry and Dorothy Hainer was likely Dorothy
Hainer's father. Richard Hainer also had a daughter Dorothy, but she
married it appears a Mr. May and second a Mr. Gildes.

Witt Putman was an early historian of the Putman family, and we are greatly

De Witt wrote a letter that found its way into The Post Express, a New
York newspaper. The Post Express
printed it on 7 January 1895:
My life has been a very queer one, and if I do say it
myself an exciting one. I have been
everywhere and without being foolhardy or reckless in anything have come into
more than my share of danger. It
began before I was fifteen, for I had already entered the Army.
I have a medal of honor for bravery at Chancellorsville, and a noted
officer said in his report that the act was one of the bravest of the war.
At Gettysburg, I received another medal.
This was for serving a gun alone when all the rest of the men were killed
or wounded. My captain, in a letter
to me, by the way, said that the state of New York has erected a monument upon
that very spot, on the left of Pickett's charge about twenty-five feet from
where their right rested. I was
made a second Lieut; but the fact is, I was only as big as a pint of cider.
There were several other episodes of similar sort during the war, but I
was so confoundedly young I did not get my just desserts.

Aaron was born 23 August 1813 and baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church of
Caughnawaga. He married Catherine
Relyay, who was born in NY in 1815.
A reporter for a Johnstown, NY, paper gathered the following information for an
article on John's son Aaron I.
Putman. The newspaper published it
in August 1901:
The writer of this article, when passing near the Baker
Block, yesterday, was accosted by an aged stranger who wished to know it the
stone structure across the street was the old Episcopal Church.
When assured that such was the fact, the polite stranger remarked, "I
attended Church there more than 70 years ago, but in some way it has changed so
that I did not recognized the place.
When informed that the Church he used to attend fronted on Church Street
and was burned in 1836, things began to appear more familiar to the stranger,
who proved to be Rev. Aaron I.
Putman, a Baptist clergyman from Jasper Co., IN.
He was born on his father's farm in Albany Bush, Montgomery Co., on
August 25, 1813. There he took his
birthday dinner August 25, 1901. He
learned the wagon makers trade in the shop of Hiram Austin in the Village of
Johnstown, in 1832, and there he labored until 1835.
He was baptized by Rev. Abraham Van Horne at Caughnawaga,
NY, where he was united in marriage by that minister to Catherine Relyea
February 4, 1838. She was the
eldest daughterof James and Deborah Relyea, who then resided about three miles
easterly from the Village of Johnstown, NY.
Mrs. Aaron I. Putman died in
Newton Co., IN, July 26, 1898. And
there her remains are buried.
When Aaron I. Putman was a boy, his associates in times of
high tide used to descend the stairs beneath the old stone church in Johnstown
and with long sticks poke Sir William Johnson's casket to see it float upon the
water. There was no other casket to
be seen within the vault. Aaron I.
Putman never engaged in the pastime, which he regarded as a desecration of the
tomb. He removed to Cleveland, OH,
in 1838, and from there to Fort Wayne, IN, in May 1847.
His blacksmith works at Fort Wayne, IN, was burned May 20, 1850, and no
insurance.
He then turned his attention to farming in that locality
until 1861, when he removed to Newton Co., IN, where he became quite an
extensive farmer. He resided there
until December 1898 when he removed to Jasper Co., IN, his present home.
He was licensed to preach over thirty years ago and was ordained as a
Baptist clergyman, October 8, 1884.
He has officiated as pastor of various churches in Indiana.
He has been pension agent, justice of the peace, and postmaster in Newton
Co., IN, for many years. He was
born a Whig and has since the dissolution of that party been a staunch
Republican. He neither chews,
smokes, or drinks whiskey and has no aches or pains.
He now wears a badge bearing the title "One in a Million" representing
total abstinence. He is a very
intelligent gentleman and has a surprising memory.
He writes readily without glasses and is a firm believer in future
rewards and punishments. After a hearty handshake, a final good-bye, and a
fervent "God Bless You," the aged and conscientious Indiana Minister vanished
from sight.
He is now stopping with his relatives in this city and
expects to return to his home in Indiana about the middle of the present month.
. . . Rev. Aaron I. Putman's father was John V. Putman, a farmer, who lived and
died in Albany Bush, 3 miles east of Johnstown.
The formers grandfather, Victor A. Putman, was born and reared in Stone
Arabia and there married a Ms. . .
. [Schultz].
Later, he moved to Tribes Hill near where his remains were first buried
on his farm. A few days since his
grandson, Rev. Aaron I. Putman
caused the remains to be removed to the old part of the Tribes Hill Cemetery
where many of the Putmans are buried.
The remains of Victor A.
Putman were first buried in 1800 on the farm, but when they were removed a few
days ago his principal bones were found intact except the loss of one of his
teeth. The hinges of his original
casket were also found and again re-interred with his bones . .

Matthias Becker.
Mathias was born in 1828 in New York State.
Portrait and Biographical Album of St. Joseph County, Michigan, gives the
following description of Matthias:
Matthias Becker Putman, stands among the foremost of the
agriculturist of St. Joseph County who have been instrumental in building up its
great farming interest. Matthias is
a prominent citizen of Constantine Township, where he owns a large farm on
section 36, and is extensively engaged in agriculture.
He has one of the finest residences in the township, and his home is very
attractive.
Mr. Putman is the son of a pioneer family that was well
known here in the early times.
Though he was but nine years of age when he accompanied his parents to their new
home in the forest depths of Southern Michigan, he may well be denominated a
pioneer himself.
Matthias has been a dweller in St. Joseph County and in the
Constantine Township, as a boy and a man, for over fifty years, and in that time
he has witnessed the wonderful changes that have been brought about by the
energy and the indomitable perseverance of the early pioneers and their
successors. For they have rendered
this one of the richest and most prosperous farming regions in the country, with
extensive commercial interest and flourishing towns and cities as well.
It must be a pleasant thought to him that he has materially contributed
to this prosperity.
Matthias was born in Johnstown, Montgomery County, New
York, on 17 March, 1827. He was the
seventh of eight children, four sons and four daughters, born to Peter F. and
Maria (Becker) Putman. His parents
were also natives of Montgomery County, and were born respectively in Johnstown
and Florida Townships. They married
and settled down in Montgomery County, and all of their children were born there
as well.
In August of 1896, they broke up their old home, and with
their family came to St. Joseph County as Mr. Putnam having visited here in
Michigan in April and had purchased a tract of land in
south-eastern Constantine Township, for which he paid $12.50 an acre.
Matthias was a lad of only nine years when he accompanied
his parents to this state, consequently most of his life has been spent here.
He has been as much interested in the progress and growth of the
commonwealth of Michigan as if he were a native and was to the manor born.
He was reared on a farm, and in the pioneer influences that he obtained
in his early life here, he grew to be a vigorous, self-helpful and capable young
man. He adopted the calling to
which he was reared, and in following agriculture has accumulated considerable
wealth. He owns 300 acres of
valuable land all in one body in Constantine Township.
He has it under fine cultivation and it is supplied with substantial and
commodious buildings for all purposes, and he has the most approved machinery
for the lightening of labor.
Matthias Becker Putman and Miss Sarah A. Dickinson were
united in marriage on 12 October, 1859, in Florence Township.
Mrs. Putman is in many respects a superior woman, and she presides with
her characteristic graciousness over her and her husband's commodious
well-appointed home, dispensing its hospitalities with a free and a happy heart.
She is warmly seconded in her efforts to entertain friends or strangers,
by her husband and family.
Sarah A. Dickinson was born in Florence Township, St.
Joseph County, on 11 March 1837.
She was the eldest of five children three sons and two daughters, born to George
and Sarah (Johnson) Dickerson, who were both natives of Yorkshire, England.
Her father came to Michigan, and was a pioneer of White Pigeon.
His wife came to this country in 1833, and they were married in Gilead,
Branch County, Michigan, near the residence of Governor Luce.
They began their married life in Florence Township, and continued it
there until death did part them. George died 3 May, of 1861, and Sarah died 12
January of 1867. Mrs. Dickinson had
been married before her marriage to George Dickinson.
She was the widow of John Bowman, who died in England.
She had one child by that marriage:
daughter Mary, who died in 1868 at White Pigeon, the wife of Johnà J.
Davis.
By her marriage to Mr. Dickinson she had five children, Viz
george, a farmer in Florence Township; Anna, wife of Charles Kellog of Florence
Township; Richard, in White pigeon Township; Charles, also in Florence Township,
and Mrs. Putman.
Mr. and Mrs. Putman are the parents of six children, Viz:
Anna, who lives at home; Maria, who died when about two and one half years old;
Mary, Nellie, George, and John.
Their daughter, Mary, was married at their residence to Frank F. Hotchin of
Florence Township on 5 December, 1888, and there was a large gathering of
friends to witness the impressive ceremony.
Mr. Putman is a man of clear head
and sagacious judgement, and possesses weight and influence in the affairs of
this community, with which his interest have been bound up for so long.
No one is more liberal or public-spirited than he is in encouraging the
various schemes for the benefit of the township and the county.
He is thoroughly respected for those characteristics that mark the true
man and the honest citizen. He has
been the School Director€for many years, and has held some of the minor offices.
In politics he casts his vote with the Democratic party.
Mrs. Putman is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and
has been for upward of thirty years.
He and his wife have made their home here for the remainder
of their lives. Matthias died here
in November of 1858, and Sarah died here several years prior that date.

time.
